Yes! OHVs can be driven on local roads and over 3,500 miles of trails in the Black Hills. A Black Hills Motorized Trail Permit is required to use the motorized trail system and unlicensed OHVs on roads designated “open to all vehicles.”

Street-legal OHVs may also operate on public roads and highways but require a horn, headlights, brake lights, rearview mirror, and a specific permit. Eye protection is required unless the vehicle has a windshield.

For more information on OHV regulations and permits, follow this link. Apply for a street-legal permit here.

Yes! All OHV trail access from Robins Roost requires some highway travel, but the nearest entry points are very close. China Gulch Road is just over one mile west of Robins Roost, and Ruby Gulch Road is just under one mile east.

We recommend using the Avenza Maps app for navigation on the trails. The GPS system works well on all routes and is easy to use. Four free maps are included for the Black Hills trail system; search “Black Hills NF - MVUM” in the Avenza Maps Store.

The short answer is, "No".
Tents, campers, and RVs are not allowed for additional sleeping accommodations. This means the guest limits cannot be exceeded even if the guests are staying in the camper or RV. Small RVs may be parked at your cabin or motel unit if they do not block parking or access for other guests. Campers and RVs may not connect to utilities at Robins Roost without prior permission.
Yes! All towels and linens are provided for both cabin and motel guests.

Aside from a sense of adventure, guests may want to bring:

  • Condiments and seasonings: Only salt and pepper are provided.

  • Ice: Ice trays are in the freezer; bulk ice is not provided.

  • Personal hygiene products: Hand soap and dish soap are provided; other items like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are not.

  • Lawn chairs: Each cabin has picnic tables and two chairs; motel units have benches outside and a fire pit area with chairs. Additional picnic tables are available at the communal outdoor area. Extra chairs float around the property but are not guaranteed.

The Black Hills are famously unpredictable. Snow can occur as late as June or as early as August, while shorts and flip-flops are sometimes worn on New Year’s Day. Temperatures can reach over 100 degrees or drop as low as 35 degrees below zero. Rain, hail, and wind are all possible at any time.

Visitors in the fall, winter, or spring should be prepared for all four seasons, and summer visitors may experience three. We recommend bringing hoodies for cool summer nights. Always check local forecasts for the exact areas you plan to visit before your trip.
